People often mistake technology for a static picture. It’s less like a picture and more like a movie. It’s the velocity of technology innovation that matters. It’s the acceleration.
– Elon Musk
Owing to the above mentioned quote, the automobile industry has come a long way in covering all innovations and developing itself. Keeping in mind the importance of innovations in the automobile industry, the Training and Placement (TAP) Cell of BIT Sindri organized a live webinar on “Hybrid Electric Vehicles”. The aim of arranging the webinar was to deliver the undergraduate students, the introduction to the potential of electric vehicles in India in the coming future, and the role electrification will play in its feasibility.
The webinar was held on December 15, in which Toyota Learning and Development-India Division, delivered their presentation. The event began with an analogous study between human evolution and automobile industry development. Many illustrations were cited depicting human curiosity and the evolution of basic life skills leading to the all-round development of mankind, industrial revolution, the automobile industry, and so forth.
As the webinar proceeded, a short study on the history of the automobile industry occupied the center of discussion wherein crucial inventions with a proper timeline were discussed. The overall progress and growth in the automobile sector, especially in recent years, was also a point of dialogue and discussion. The stream of the webinar further shifted to the ongoing advancements in the automobile sector especially regarding “Vehicle Electrification”. The speakers shed light on various types of engines used in the automobile industry and put special emphasis on Internal Combustion Engine (ICE or IC engine), an engine which generates motive power by the burning of petrol, oil, or other fuel with air inside the engine – and also talked about its role in the socio-economic growth of a nation.
A short video was presented showing the operational difference between ICE and Electric Vehicles (EVs), emphasizing the upper hand EVs have over their ICE administered counterparts in case of productivity. Further in the webinar, categories of EVs were listed viz., Battery-EVs, Fuel Cell-EVs, and Hybrid-EVs – presenting their key components and setup with the help of animated visuals. A very detailed analysis was performed on micro, mild, and smart, strong hybrids with the help of presentations during the session. After some remarks on the definition, setup, types, and series-parallel and series-parallel of powertrains and benefits of series-parallel powertrains – the online event shifted its attention to the structure of an EV. A mild discussion was also held in the midst of the session about the pros, cons, and applications of a group of batteries, like Li-ion, lead-acid, and solid-state. Important points on electric motors and power control units were also briskly covered. At last, some important data insights on the Indian electrification scenario were mentioned, weighing on terminologies like energy security, greenhouse emissions, pollution, and so on.
“The session was wrapped with introducing CASE (Connected; Automation; Shared Mobility; Electrification). Finally, a link was pinned in the chatbox by clearing which the candidates would be eligible for an e-certificate” said training and placement in-charge Prof.(Dr) Ghanshyam Rai.
With such advantageous webinars and valuable sessions, the attendees gather priceless knowledge. The contribution of the resource agency and TAP cell is praiseworthy and must be noted.
