“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, first book of the Millennium series published in 2005, is as intriguing as a crime fiction gets. Swedish talent Stieg Larsson delivered a stellar on his crime debut with his flawless detailed writing on such a complex and yet gripping plot.

The book is about investigative journalist “Mikale Blomkvist”, who took the job of uncovering a mysterious disappearance, that took place forty years ago, in exchange of something that could help him to right his wrong. He is assisted by the punk hacker “Lisbeth Salander” in the investigation. The duo are completely different in every aspect but get along as the search intensifies. All human emotions are displayed with utmost accuracy and the story keeps on unfolding till the very end. It can also be seen as an attempt to dig into the dark side of powerful institutions and people. All the characters are well scripted and with every page, the novel gets much more interesting. The novel has got it’s share of praise and even been called “The Thriller of the Decade”.

It has also been adapted as a major film starring Daniel Craig as Blomkvist and Rooney Mara as Lisbeth. The movie is directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker David Fincher. However, despite all the big names, the movie is not half as good as the novel and I strongly suggest to go with the novel.

Larsson died of heart attack shortly after presenting the manuscript of three novels of series. However the Millennium series lives on as the fourth novel was authored by David Lagercrantz, authorized by Larsson’s father and brother. The name of all the books of millennium series are:-

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
The Girl who Played with Fire
The Girl who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest
The Girl in the Spider’s Web
